What are some habits you cultivate to get you into the work groove?
I like to do a lot of my thinking on the subway where I'm sort of forced to be offline. Being in this residency, I've learned that I do some of my best thinking while I'm distracted or doing another task. I've been cleaning the school whenever I get the chance and it's become quite meditative, allowing my thoughts wander without over analyzing them. I try not to put too much pressure on myself. I try to give myself breaks from making art. I try to make things that are based in my life, in real experiences.
If you could see one piece of art right now, which one would it be?
I can't think of an artwork I'm dying to see in person but I do really enjoy that feeling of seeing a historical piece of art in person for the first time. There's something special about studying a sculpture or painting for years and then being able to stand in front of it with your body in the same space.
Describe your residency experience so far.
My experience at the residency as been exciting, it's been really amazing to get to know the other artists I'm sharing the space with and exploring the Dragon Academy. I love learning about other's practices and becoming inspired by them.
Talk a bit about what you’ve been working on the last few weeks?
I've been exploring ideas of being both custodian and mother figure at Roundtable and the experiences of trying to fill those roles. The last few weeks I've begun taking on cleaning up the trash which has been daunting as well as cleaning the patio and leaving little notes for my studio mates. I'd like to cook more for people in the Residency as well but still trying to find the time!
Beverage of choice while working.
Water or tea sometimes ice coffee :)
Where will we find your work on opening night?
-> Opening night I'm hoping to perform but my piles of dirt will be hiding out on the third floor, the farthest office on the left! <-
Draw a representation of what you look like while you’re working.
This is a cartoon my dad drew of me and it's probably more accurate of my artistic process than anything I could scribble down...
